The COVID-19 pandemic has arguably changed the way nearly every industry does business. Supply chains are adapting to better suit our new way of living and working.
Color management is no different. The industries we serve have been moving toward increased digitalization for years, moving to fully digital workflows, which highlight the importance of digital color management technology. Additionally, the need to be able to work remotely has accelerated the urge to go digital. With that in mind, let’s look at the ways color management is poised to shift in 2021 as more supply chains position themselves to meet the challenges of the moment – and the future.
1. The Ability to Measure Color Anywhere, Anytime
Perhaps the biggest shift that we have all experienced over the past year is the necessity of remote work. This became the “new normal” in 2020, and it forced us to rethink what can be done digitally when working virtually, or when returning to the office in the future. We expect to see a larger shift to a fully digital workflow with a reliance on portable digital tools that allow manufacturers and brands to successfully continue their work from anywhere in the world even in small home offices or on the go.

This ensures color readings will be consistently accurate no matter where the operator is located. 2. A Focus on Reducing Environmental Impact
With an inability to travel and discuss color in person, as well as a limited ability to receive physical samples while working from home, many supply chains experienced unprecedented challenges in the early months of the pandemic. Regardless, companies still needed to produce, forcing them to adapt to digital color management practices more quickly and showing what a more sustainable approach to color could look like long term.
To truly minimize environmental impact, many manufacturers are embracing digital color evaluation as part of modern product development. The benefits of this shift can reduce the need for producing and shipping physical samples and improve quality control.
We are continuing to address sustainability from an efficiency standpoint to help manufacturers to avoid as much waste as possible.
3. Starting to Utilize Big Data and Business Analytics
Looking ahead, big data and business analytics have immense potential to influence business decisions. This includes decisions related to color. Many companies are starting to explore the idea of analyzing big data and translating it into knowledge to answer key business questions.
When it comes to how the shift toward big data and business analytics will impact the way we measure and manage color, there is still so much untapped potential. We’re seeing a great deal of interest to better leverage this kind of data, whether on the production side to improve efficiency or the design front to better predict color trends.
